Homeless Count (Indianapolis)

In 2007, the Coalition for Homelessness Intervention and Prevention (CHIP) enlisted Indiana University’s Center for Health Policy (CHP) to undertake a citywide count of the homeless in the Indianapolis community. Along with the count, the CHP also conducted the annual housing inventory count, which is an inventory of beds for the homeless, including seasonal and temporary beds. The CHP took a leadership role in refining the methodology for conducting the homeless count, which included participation by both homeless shelters and street teams. In addition to refining the methodology, the CHP coordinated many administrative details to ensure the projects would run smoothly. The goal of the homeless count and housing inventory was to assess the current needs of homeless individuals in Marion County and identify any program service gaps. Results of the count were also used by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to make informed funding decisions. Due to the success of the previous counts, CHIP has again enlisted the CHP to plan and administer the 2009 homeless count and housing inventory in January and has added an additional summer count to be conducted in July.
