Center welcomes April Williams-Shaw as new chief operating officer

The Center for Urban Policy and the Environment welcomes April Williams-Shaw as the new chief operating officer. Ms. Shaw was born and raised in Indianapolis. Prior to joining the Center, she was the special assistant to the executive director for the International Law Institute-Uganda African Centre for Legal Excellence in Kampala, Uganda. Previously, she was employed as the administrative coordinator for the Gerontology Institute at Georgia State University in Atlanta, where she managed the Institute’s budgets, contracts, and grants.

Ms. Shaw holds a bachelor’s degree in urban studies from Georgia State University. In December 2004, she will receive her master’s in political science with a concentration in international relations from Georgia State University.

An active volunteer, Ms. Shaw served as a board member and business manager for the East Africa-American Business Council; a member of the Citizen Review Panel for the Cobb County Juvenile Court (Marietta, Ga.); and board member for the Crime Victims Advocacy Council (Marietta, Ga.). Ms. Shaw will replace Tami Barreto as COO, who will continue working part time for the Center on special projects.
