Institute researchers conduct IPS Police Department review

March 17, 2016

The IU Public Policy Institute partnered with Indianapolis Public Schools to conduct an overview of IPS Police Department Operations and Activities. Senior policy analysts Dona Sapp and Rachel Thelin worked with IPS to examine budget and personnel, perform key informant interviews, and examine law enforcement data, and surveys from students, staff, and parents.

Some of the key recommendations include:

  • Develop a better records management/data collection system to better evaluate the success of planned programs.
  • Create a process for officer training that includes maintaining a list and schedule of training opportunities, officer training records, and training certifications received.
  • Build stronger, sustainable partnerships both internally and externally in an effort to share resources and develop a multi-faceted approach to ensuring school safety.
