Center to organize project to reform, restructure local government

Governor Mitch Daniels has appointed a commission to study and recommend ways to streamline and improve local government. Co-chairs are former Governor Joe Kernan and Indiana Supreme Court Chief Justice Randall Shepard.

The Center for Urban Policy and the Environment will provide staff and facilities for the commission. The Center was chosen for the task because of its non-ideological, data-driven approach to research and its expertise in consensus building. The commission will recommend strategies to make government more efficient that can be used to lessen the tax burden on Hoosiers.

As one of its first tasks, the commission launched a Web site to give citizens, elected officials, and the media an efficient way to follow the commission's work, contribute, and ask questions. The Web site is available at
