Using Visual Preference Surveys in Planning Forested Landscapes

Services: Analytical studies, Survey design, Geographic information systems

Research Area: Land Use & Environment

In 1999-2002, through a contract with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources and with the support of INDY Parks and the Indiana Campus Compact, the Center took on a project to obtain preferences for forested landscapes and to educate urban foresters. The purpose of this educational study was threefold:
(1) To obtain information about people's preferences for forested landscapes along urban greenways so greenway managers would better understand the types of landscapes that users find attractive;
(2) To educate urban foresters, environmental planners, and other interested citizens and officials about people's preferences for forested landscapes along urban greenways; and
(3) To prepare a technical report and an interpretive brochure that urban environmental professionals can use to improve management of forests along urban greenways.
