Traumatic Brain Injury Prevalence: Indiana Department of Correction Prisoner Population

Services: Policy studies, Analytical studies, Policy analysis

Research Area: Criminal Justice

The Indiana Criminal Justice Institute (ICJI) recently entered into discussions with the Indiana Department of Correction (IDOC), the Brain Injury Association of Indiana (BIAI), and the IU Public Policy Institute (PPI) to address the problem of traumatic brain injury (TBI) in Indiana’s correctional facilities. Through these discussions, a process was identified for moving forward with plans to pursue funding to develop a pre- and post-release TBI treatment intervention program for affected individuals. The group agreed that the first step in this process would be to conduct an initial baseline brain injury screening of prisoners to be performed by IDOC at intake. IDOC and ICJI requested the assistance of PPI in analyzing and reporting on the baseline TBI screening data, including a study of how the Indiana data compare to previous studies from other states and a review of recommended best practices for TBI intervention programs for incarcerated populations.
