Data Collection for the Indy Parks and Greenways

Services: Data analysis, Data management

Research Area: Land Use & Environment

PPI provides usage counts for the Indy Greenways trail network. Since 2000, PPI staff and faculty have studied trail usage in Indianapolis, with some of the work funded through the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (2003-2005). The project involves data collection at 20 locations spread out along the following sites: Monon Trail, Fall Creek Trail, Canal Tow Path, Pleasant Run Trail, White River Trail, Eagle Creek Trail, Pennsy Trail, regional parks, community parks, neighborhood parks, and natural resource areas. PPI maintains the equipment and provides data analysis and reporting on a regular basis.

The city uses these data to make decisions regarding maintenance, investment, and budgeting. Beginning in January 2014, the contracting department is the Department of Public Works, rather than Indy Parks.
