Indiana Risk Assessment System – Pretrial Assessment Tool (IRAS-PAT) Pilot Program

Service: Program evaluation

Research Areas: Criminal Justice, Public Safety

In the spring of 2016, Indiana Judicial Center (IJC) contracted with the Center for Criminal Justice Research, a research center within the Indiana University Public Policy Institute at the School of Public and Environmental Affairs at IUPUI, to conduct an evaluation of a pilot program utilizing the Indiana Risk Assessment System – Pretrial Assessment Tool (IRAS-PAT). The IRAS-PAT requires a very brief face-to-face interview (approximately 10 minutes) with defendants and follow-up verification by court staff using administrative data records. The tool is designed to capture information on seven risk variables that will allow defendants to be categorized as low, medium, or high risk for a failure-to-appear in court and/or committing a new offense while on pretrial probation.
