RHYME Mentoring Program
We invite high school students from refugee families to participate in the RHYME summer mentoring program where we will assist teens in building resiliency, problem-solving, and communication skills through a series of fun, creative activities. Faculty and staff from the Indiana University Public Policy Institute in the School of Public and Environmental Affairs, the Richard M. Fairbanks School of Public Health, the Office of Community Engagement, the Division of Student Affairs (Office of the Campus Center and Student Experiences), and the Herron School of Art and Design are partnering with the Immigrant Welcome Center to host RHYME program participants during a summer camp to be held on the IUPUI campus July 17th thru July 21st, 2017.
Each teen will be paired with a young adult mentor (an IUPUI student role model who presents a positive image of where our participants can be in a few years’ time). Campers will participate in an identity development, resilience-building curriculum, and will be asked to choose three art- and movement-based activities offered from areas such as: storytelling, yoga, dance, art, and music. These activities will provide opportunities for youth to express themselves non-verbally in a supportive environment. A family luncheon is also planned to strengthen community connections with all members of the refugee teen camp participants’ families.
The second phase of the program involves bringing camp participants and their families back to campus 3-4 times throughout the academic year to reinforce positive behaviors learned from the camp and to further familiarize families with IUPUI, its outstanding educational programs, and the many opportunities it offers to students. These ‘booster sessions’ will provide participants with additional opportunities for self-discovery and to develop a stronger sense of identity in a supportive environment.
