Assessing the Current Value and Potential Contributions of the Greater Indianapolis YMCA

Service: Economic valuation

Research Areas: Economic Development, Housing & Community Development

In 2010, the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis had 13 branch locations in central Indiana which served over 185,000 members. As part of a commitment to help make Indianapolis one of the ten healthiest cities in the United States, the YMCA wanted to serve areas of Indianapols that were not being served by YMCA or other private sector exercise and fitness facilities. Developing facilities in these areas should help meet the ten healthiest cities goal, as well as make the surrounding neighborhoods more attractive and marketable to new residents. This report by PPI measures the potential contributions to the community and YMCA members of the expansion strategy and (then) current operations. The analysis identifies and quantifies some of the key benefits attributable to the YMCA's operations, expansion strategy, and the healthy city campaign.
